Stephen J. Thorne has been taking pictures for 38 years. He is an editor and an award-winning journalist and photographer at Canada's national news agency. After spending the last 20 years of his 28-year journalism career covering disasters and war, including a year in Afghanistan, he opted for the editor's desk and began shooting art nudes in November 2006. Earlier this year, he ventured into fashion photography and is currently building his dual portfolios of fashion and art nudes, mainly in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, New York, Cleveland and Detroit. His signature work, which he calls his "balm for the tortured soul," is typified by natural light and moody shadows. It has just been announced that a major exhibition of his Afghan pictures, stories and artifacts will be moving to Alberta's Glenbow Museum in Calgary next July after a yearlong run at Canada's National War Museum in Ottawa. He has had several other exhibitions of his photojournalism, including selected cowboy works from his longterm photo project, The Vanishing Canadians.
