H. R. Giger is recognized as one of the world’s foremost Surrealist artists. Born in 1940, in Switzerland, he studied architecture and industrial design. At age 26 he had his first solo exhibition, followed in 1969 by the worldwide distribution of his first poster series. Giger’s surrealistic Biomechanical dreamscapes, which formed the cornerstone of his fame, were created in his unique freehand painting style utilizing the airbrush.

His most famous book, H.R. Giger’s Necronomicon, served as the visual inspiration for director Ridley Scott’s movie Alien, which earned him an Academy Award in 1980 for the design of the film's title character and its otherworldly environments. Giger's other film work includes Poltergeist II, Alien3 and Species.

Throughout his career, Giger has also worked in sculpture and has created several total environments, including the HR Giger Museum Bar, at the H.R. Giger Museum, in the historic, walled city of Gruyères, Switzerland. The museum is the permanent home to many of Giger's most prominent works, and houses the largest collection of the artist's paintings, sculptures, furniture and film designs, dating from the early 1960's until the present day.
